Arlington, Texas: Cristiano Ronaldo’s quest to win the FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end on Monday after Spain scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to eliminate Portugal 1-0 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 tournament.
Substitute Mikel Merino emerged as Spain’s hero, striking in the 91st minute after latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Ferran Torres before calmly beating goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
The late winner settled a tense Round of 16 encounter at AT&T Stadium that had appeared destined for extra time.
Both European heavyweights struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for much of the contest, with disciplined defending and outstanding goalkeeping dominating proceedings.
Portugal came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening half when Nuno Mendes rattled the crossbar, while captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes were repeatedly denied by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón, who produced another commanding display between the posts.
Spain also threatened through Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Álex Baena, Pedro Porro, and Mikel Oyarzabal, but Portugal’s defence, marshalled by Diogo Costa, held firm until the closing stages.
Portugal suffered a significant setback midway through the second half when influential full-back Nuno Mendes was forced off injured and replaced by Nelson Semedo, disrupting Roberto Martínez’s tactical plans.
Sensing an opportunity, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente introduced Merino and Fabián Ruiz in the 85th minute, a move that ultimately proved decisive.
With six minutes of added time signalled by referee Anthony Taylor, Merino found the breakthrough almost immediately, firing low into the bottom corner to send the reigning European champions into the last eight.
Spain’s victory also saw them become the first team in FIFA World Cup history to keep six consecutive clean sheets, underlining the defensive solidity that has fuelled their impressive run in the tournament.
End of an iconic World Cup journey
The defeat brings the curtain down on Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable World Cup career.
The 41-year-old had confirmed before the tournament that the 2026 edition would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Although the World Cup trophy remained elusive, Ronaldo leaves the tournament as one of the greatest footballers in history.
Across an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, he won multiple domestic league titles, five UEFA Champions League trophies, the UEFA European Championship, two UEFA Nations League titles, and became Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.
Portugal reached the Round of 16 after edging Croatia 2-1 but ultimately fell short against a disciplined Spanish side that continues to impress at the tournament.
Spain will now face Belgium in the quarter-finals after the Red Devils defeated the United States later on Monday, as La Roja continue their pursuit of a second FIFA World Cup title following their triumph in 2010.
