2026 FIFA World Cup – Round of 16
Switzerland 0-0 Colombia (Switzerland win 4-3 on penalties)
Vancouver, Canada: Switzerland booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time on Tuesday.
Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland’s hero, producing a crucial save during the shootout before Ruben Vargas calmly converted the decisive penalty to send the Swiss into the last eight for the first time since the 1954 World Cup.
The victory sets up a mouthwatering quarter-final showdown against defending champions Argentina, who earlier completed a stunning comeback to beat Egypt 3-2.
Both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities during regulation time as two disciplined defences cancelled each other out in Vancouver.
Colombia threatened first in the 21st minute when Gustavo Puerta curled a powerful effort towards goal, but Kobel produced an excellent diving save to preserve parity.
Switzerland gradually grew into the contest, forcing Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas into action with fine saves to deny Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye before halftime.
Neither side managed to find a breakthrough as the first half ended goalless.
The Swiss began the second half brightly, but Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack.
Liverpool winger Luis Díaz found little space against the well-organised Swiss defence, while striker Luis Suárez squandered one of Colombia’s better opportunities by firing wide.
Despite several tactical substitutions from both benches, the deadlock remained intact at the end of the 90 minutes.
Ndoye came closest to snatching victory in stoppage time, drilling a low cross across the face of goal that narrowly evaded his teammates.
Extra time drama
The match finally came alive during extra time as Colombia piled on the pressure.
Defender Jhon Lucumí struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner before Kobel again came to Switzerland’s rescue with another outstanding save to deny Jaminton Campaz.
At the other end, Camilo Vargas kept Colombia alive with a smart stop from substitute Zeki Amdouni.
Campaz later squandered Colombia’s best opportunity of the evening, missing a golden chance just minutes before the final whistle.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the contest was decided by penalties.
Both teams missed spot-kicks during the tense shootout before Kobel made the decisive save to deny Cucho Hernández, handing Switzerland the advantage.
Vargas then stepped up to confidently dispatch the winning penalty, sealing a 4-3 shootout victory and sending the Swiss players into jubilant celebrations.
The win sees Switzerland advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years.
They will now face defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday after Lionel Scaloni’s men rallied from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 earlier in the day.
Colombia, meanwhile, exit the tournament unbeaten in normal time, having conceded just one goal before Tuesday’s encounter, but their World Cup journey ends in heartbreaking fashion.
