Jinja City, Uganda: Police in the Busoga East policing region have called upon residents to verify their details on the village voters’ registers ahead of the upcoming Lower Local Council elections, warning that failure to do so could trigger avoidable disputes on polling day.
The appeal follows the Electoral Commission’s release of the roadmap for the LC1 and LC2 elections, with voter register verification currently underway from July 6 to July 10, 2026, in villages across the country.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said the verification exercise is critical to ensuring a peaceful electoral process and preventing confusion on voting day.
“We urge all voters to actively participate in the ongoing verification and organization of the voter register, which is taking place from July 6-10, 2026, at every village,” Kasadha said.
“Individuals who do not engage in this exercise and subsequently fail to appear on the voter register should refrain from causing disturbances on election day,” he added.
Kasadha said police would not tolerate intimidation, threats or any attempts by candidates, agents or supporters to interfere with the electoral process.
“We caution those who engage in such behavior against attempting to disrupt the process, and candidates are advised to maintain peace throughout the electoral process. Any threats or intimidation will be dealt with decisively,” he warned.
He also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any incidents of intimidation or election-related threats in their communities.
“We encourage all members of the public to report any instances of intimidation or threats from individuals. We remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of all participants as they exercise their right to vote,” Kasadha said.
The Lower Local Council elections will elect LC1 chairpersons at village level and LC2 leaders at parish level, positions that often attract intense competition due to their direct influence at the grassroots.
Security agencies said deployment plans have already been finalised for all 1,187 villages in the Busoga East policing region to safeguard the electoral process and ensure free, fair and peaceful elections.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled LC1 elections for July 28, 2026, while LC2 elections will be held on August 10, 2026.
