Kampala, Uganda: At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming economies, education, healthcare and the workplace, Ugandan author and Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga is preparing to launch what he describes as a wake-up call for Africa.

His latest book, “Wake Up or Be Left Behind,” officially launches on Monday, July 13, and seeks to challenge individuals, institutions, and governments to embrace artificial intelligence as an opportunity rather than a threat.

Inspired by the work of former Google X Chief Business Officer Mo Gawdat, one of the world’s leading voices on artificial intelligence and author of Scary Smart and Alive, Dr Muganga’s new publication argues that the future will be determined not by those who fear AI, but by those who understand and shape it.

In a promotional video message released ahead of the launch, Muganga paints a picture of a world changing faster than many people realise. “In the time it takes to watch this, the world will change. Most people will not notice. I am going to make sure you do.”

According to Muganga, artificial intelligence is no longer a technology of the future. “Right now, machines are learning to think. They are already in your phone, your bank, your hospital, your children’s school.”

He argues that societies now face a defining moment. “Some people will ride this wave and rise, others will be swept away by it. The difference between them is simple. One of them understands what is coming, the other does not.”

A Book Inspired by Global AI Thinkers

Muganga says the book was inspired by conversations surrounding AI’s rapid evolution, particularly the work of Mo Gawdat, the former Chief Business Officer of Google X, who has become one of the world’s most influential advocates for ethical artificial intelligence.

Gawdat has repeatedly argued that AI itself is not humanity’s greatest threat, but rather how people choose to develop and deploy it. He believes understanding AI is essential for governments, educators, businesses, and individuals seeking to remain relevant in the decades ahead.

Like Gawdat, Muganga believes Africa cannot afford to remain a passive consumer of technologies developed elsewhere.

For years, Muganga has championed innovation-driven education, competency-based learning and digital transformation across Uganda’s higher education sector. He says the motivation behind writing the book stems from witnessing major technological decisions being made without meaningful African participation.

“For years, I have watched the future be decided far from here, for people like us, without people like us.” He continues: “I decided that stops now. So I wrote everything I know into one book, and on the 13th of July, I am giving it to the world.”

The publication explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping education, employment, entrepreneurship, governance and leadership while urging readers to position themselves for the opportunities emerging from the technology.

Rather than presenting AI as a threat, Muganga argues that knowledge is humanity’s greatest competitive advantage. “These are the only two futures left. Which one you get is not decided by luck. It is decided by what you know, and when you know it.”

He believes fear alone will not prepare people for the changes already underway. “People fear artificial intelligence. I understand why. But fear will not save you. Understanding will.”

“This book will not tell you to be afraid. It will show you how to lead.”

Preparing the Next Generation

Muganga also frames artificial intelligence as an issue that extends beyond today’s workforce to future generations. “If we get this right, this child inherits the greatest century in history.”

He describes the publication as an invitation for Africans to become active participants in shaping the AI revolution rather than passive observers.

“This is not just my book anymore. On the 13th of July, it becomes yours. Wherever you are in the world, you can hold it in your hands.”

“Read it and lead. Or wait and be left behind.”

AI Debate Growing Worldwide

Artificial intelligence has become one of the defining technological issues of the decade, with experts warning it will fundamentally reshape economies, education systems and labour markets.

While some researchers see AI driving unprecedented productivity and innovation, others warn that societies which fail to prepare their citizens risk widening inequality and losing global competitiveness.

It is within this global conversation that Muganga positions Wake Up or Be Left Behind as both a call to action and a guide for African leaders, educators, entrepreneurs and students navigating the age of artificial intelligence.
