Maracha, Uganda: The newly elected National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson for Maracha District, Charles Adiga, has died after he was knocked down by a district ambulance responding to an emergency along the Arua-Koboko Highway.
The fatal accident occurred at about 7:40 p.m. on Monday at Ovujo Trading Centre in Maracha District.
Adiga, who was also a teacher at Koyi Primary School, was reportedly walking along the roadside when the Maracha District ambulance, registration number UG 3100268, struck him from behind.
According to preliminary police investigations, the ambulance had been dispatched to transfer a pregnant woman from Eliofe Health Centre III to Maracha Hospital for specialized medical care.
Police said the driver, Michael Chandia, attempted to avoid a stationary vehicle along the highway but lost control of the ambulance, veered off the road and knocked down Adiga.
The impact left Adiga with severe injuries, including a broken neck, fractured spine and a broken left arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ambulance driver and the expectant mother being transported were not injured in the crash.
Police have commenced investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal accident, including whether speed, visibility or other factors contributed to the collision.

Maracha District Vice Chairperson Bosco Asea described Adiga’s death as a devastating loss to both the district and the ruling National Resistance Movement.
“This is a major loss to Maracha District and the NRM. Charles Adiga was a dedicated party mobiliser and a committed leader who served his community with passion,” Asea said.
Adiga had recently been elected to lead the NRM in Maracha District and was regarded by party members as one of the key grassroots mobilisers in the West Nile sub-region.
His death comes at a time when political parties across the country are strengthening grassroots structures ahead of upcoming local government and general electoral activities.
Police have urged motorists, particularly drivers of emergency response vehicles, to exercise maximum caution while responding to emergencies to avoid preventable road crashes.
