80-year-old man killed in suspected robbery in Buyende

Some residents suspect the killing may have been motivated by robbery, alleging that the elderly man had sold trees a day before his death and was believed to have been in possession of money.

Buyende, Uganda: Police in Buyende District have launched investigations into the murder of an 80-year-old man who was found dead at his home in Nakabembe B Village, Igalaza Parish, Irundu Sub-county.

The deceased has been identified as Makoma Bernado, a resident of the area who lived alone.

Residents discovered Makoma’s body on the morning of Friday, July 17, 2026, under circumstances that police have described as suspicious.

Some residents suspect the killing may have been motivated by robbery, alleging that the elderly man had sold trees a day before his death and was believed to have been in possession of money.

“Those who took his life wanted money. It is alleged that on Thursday he sold his trees, and now we have found him dead in his home,” one resident said.

However, police had not confirmed the motive by the time of publication.

The LC I Chairperson of Tigawalana Village, Amuza, confirmed the incident, saying the matter had been reported to police for investigation. “We have confirmed the incident and handed it over to police to carry out investigations.”

Police officers later visited the scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Meanwhile, Irundu Sub-county LC III Chairperson Stephen Magala condemned the killing and appealed to residents to work closely with security agencies in identifying those responsible.

“We condemn this act of murder that is happening in the area. We call upon residents to work with security to ensure such criminals are arrested.”

Police recovered the body from the scene and transported it to the mortuary for a postmortem examination as detectives continue investigations to establish the exact cause of death and identify the perpetrators.

No arrests had been made by press time.
