Information obtained from the police indicates that Amongi who has been working with the Election Commission in Kwania district started a new relationship with another person, a thing which reportedly did not go well with Awio, who made several attempts to win her back.

On March 29th, 2022, Awio attacked Amongi at her home in Anai Ober cell, Anai ward in Lira city West where he assaulted her and cut her neck before locking the house and disappearing.

Her decomposing body was discovered on April 1st, 2022 when neighbours noticed a stench coming from her house and a swarm of flies covering the door.

North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed Awio’s arrest saying the suspect who voluntarily handed over himself to police eventually tried to commit suicide in the police cells.

Okema described the incident as unfortunate, saying Awio will most likely be slapped with murder based on the guidance of the Resident State Attorney.

Lira City West Division Police Station is investigating the matter under SD Ref 31/01/04/2022. There is a growing concern about such cases in the Lango sub-region.

In September last year, a man attacked and killed his wife in the same village and was also lynched. Denis Alal, 53, hacked Christine Akello, 43, to death on September 13, 2021, prompting residents to capture and lynch him.
