Four arrested after UPDF officer killed, dumped in swamp

Oyam DPC Mubangizi said the deceased’s body was later taken to the UPDF Fourth Division headquarters in Gulu District for an autopsy report to be conducted.

OYAM, UGANDA: Four people, including a boda boda rider, are in police custody on allegations of murder after a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer was killed and his body dumped in a swamp near his home at Onea Village, Kamdini Sub-county in Oyam district.

The deceased identified as Vincent Olanya, a UPDF intelligence officer in the area was also the LCIII councillor, representing Juma Parish at Kamdini Sub-county council, Oyam District.

According to residents, Olanya’s car was found abandoned about 100 metres away from his home after he was killed on Saturday.

One of the residents, Mr Denis Gony said Olanya’s body was discovered on Sunday morning by a boda boda rider.

“The area councillor for Kamdini Sub-county was discovered dead and the cause of his death is still unknown. The body was discovered at Onea Swamp near Nora Trading Centre,” he said.

Mr Terence Omonya, Kamdini LC3 chairman, suspected that Olanya could have been killed by strangulation, as “his neck was broken and blood was oozing from the ears.”

The Oyam District Police Commander, Mr Innocent Mubangizi confirmed the report and said they are probing the case as they search for Olanya’s killers.

“He is a UPDF officer. When we receive the postmortem report, we shall be able to tell the cause of the death. The motive of the killing is also not yet known,” he said.

He said, the four so far arrested include the boda boda rider who last transported the deceased on Saturday evening.
