A woman in Kampala was forced by fellow passengers forced to pick up a plastic bag she had thrown out of the window as the new law enforced by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to for motorists and car users to have dustbins in their vehicles came into effect.
The rare incident happened on Saturday, April 1st in Kataza zone, Bugolobi, a Kampala urban suburb.
“A female passenger forced to pick a polythene bag thrown outside a coaster in Kataza, Bugolobi in Kampala on April 1, 2023, the day NEMA had initially planned to start enforcing their directives on having dustbins in cars,” Monitor said in a Facebook post.
Photos shared by the local publication on Facebook showed the woman surrounded by the coaster bus operators as she picked up the black plastic bag and later disposed it of rightfully.
The move was lauded by members of the public who maintained that such should be enforced at all levels to instil a culture of responsibility.
One commenter; Charles Amanzuru Kacebo said:”This is a good move by NEMA therefore its responsibility of each citizen to implement it. Littering is a dangerous habit to our environment and health.”
“This is what we should be doing. It’s hurting to see people throwing wastes just any how. “We”, Ugandans are very poor when it comes to waste management,” another Facebook user Odongo George Baclean commented.
“We need this as Ugandans. Some seemingly elite and responsible people do this and you just wonder how they were brought up,” said Aisha Bbosa.
Salman Mansur added on; “This shouldn’t be a responsibility of NEMA only but every citizens in the country much appreciated.”
While Atwiine Darlex said; “I wish you keep it up so that we can adopt that good habit as Ugandans but the problem we have as a country is consistency.”
