JINJA, UGANDA: Property worth millions of shillings was Tuesday left destroyed after an early morning fire gutted three factory buildings at Keshwala Group of Companies in Masese, Jinja South Division of Jinja City.

The factory owned by businessman Ranmal Keshwala is popularly known for manufacturing an assortment of household items, including packaging products among others. Some of the items that were burnt include candles, assorted brands of alcoholic drinks, and polythene among others.

According to Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson ASP James Mubi, police are yet to establish the cause of the fire that started at around 4:30 am when most casual labourers were leaving the premises.

By 8:00 am, huge flames and smoke were still visible, and firefighters were on the scene attempting to contain the situation. An anonymous source reported that the affected area has several highly flammable substances, which has exacerbated the situation despite the application of foam to contain the fire.

Mubi says the fire brigade teams from both the police and well-wishers have contained the fire from spreading throughout the factory premises. The plastics manufacturing plant, spare parts stores, and the transport department were severely affected by the fire, but efforts to ascertain the exact losses are currently underway.

He added that nobody was injured in the fire but was quick to say that police have intensified their firefighting efforts to ensure that the situation normalizes before the day ends.

Mubi has encouraged proprietors of factories to always have water hydrants for easy access to water since it becomes challenging for firefighters to collect water from Central Police Station.
