Luwero, (UG): The National Unity Platform Party President Robert Kyagulanyi has condemned rampant land grabbing which has left many people landless in the Greater Luwero districts.
The matter was first raised by area Members of Parliament Brenda Nabukenya, Luttamaguzi Ssemakula and Allan Mayanja during a rally held at Kasana playgrounds as part of Kyagulanyi’s mobilisation tour in Luwero District on Friday.
Kyagulanyi was received by multitudes of enthusiastic supporters at around 3 pm before opening his party offices along Kyebakutika Road near Kasana Police Station. He then proceeded to Kasana Playground for the rally.
During the rally, the legislators alleged that land grabbing in the area has been orchestrated by officials from the ruling government. The MPs said that several people had lost their land and others died without getting justice.
Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament told Kyagulanyi that apart from rampant land grabbing, the area is lagging in health and education services despite their contribution to the war that brought President Yoweri Museveni to power.
While addressing the crowd, Kyagulanyi first paid tribute to people who were killed during the National Resistance Army War of 1981-1986 and in the present-day government. He said that it’s unfortunate that the people they helped to capture power have turned against them and are now grabbing their land.
Kyagulanyi added that a small group has benefited from state resources and now plotting to front Museveni’s son to continue exploiting the nation, adding that acts of land grabbing and other practices will not end unless residents wake up and lead another struggle to liberate themselves from the current NRM regime.
Earlier on Kyagulanyi received a backcloth, spear and shield to encourage him to continue the fight until he takes power. Luwero was, up until 2021, one of the areas where President Museveni enjoyed immense support following the guerrilla war that brought his party to power. However, in 2021, Museveni lost support in Luwero district and parts of Nakaseke which were swept by Kyagulanyi’s new outfit.
According to Presidential results for Luwero, Museveni obtained only 41,166 votes (27.94 per cent) while Kyagulanyi Sentamu scored 103,782 votes (70.45 per cent). The huge crowds that turned up to welcome Kyagulanyi indicated that the area is still leaning toward opposition.
