One dead, scores injured after bus collides with elephant in Nwoya accident

Nwoya, (UG): At least one person died on the spot and twelve others sustained injuries after a stray elephant collided with a bus on Tuesday evening in a tragic accident in Nwoya District along the Karuma-Pakwach highway.

The 7:20 p.m. road crash occurred when a bus of Reg No UBB 584K, belonging to Baby Coach Company en route from Kampala to Yumbe district crashed into a ditch after striking the elephant within Murchison Falls National Game Park, approximately eight kilometres from the Karuma junction.

Survivors of the road crash say the bus driver allegedly attempted to avoid a herd of elephants, but in the process, one of the elephants was hit, causing the bus to veer into a ditch.

The deceased passenger has been identified as Denis Tokuru, 25, while the twelve other passengers who were abound the bus include; John Matovu, Najib Kivumbi, Morris Bayo, William Oroch, Hellen Ayikoru, Margaret Nyuta, Charity Onyungrwo, Santos Komakech, Jude Komakeck, Paska Achieng, Doreen Munguchi, and Razak Abdallah.

The Aswa West Region Police Spokesperson, David Mudong Ongom, said traffic police arrived at the scene of the accident and arranged for the injured passengers to be transported to RG Hospital Karuma and nearby clinics for medical treatment.

He added that the body of the deceased, Denis Tokuru was by press time still trapped beneath the bus at the accident site, awaiting a heavy-duty vehicle to assist with its removal.

“The case regarding the road accident has been officially recorded at Nwoya Central Police Station under reference number TAR 584/2023,” Mr Mudong said.
