Student, 27, electrocuted during casual labour in Lira City

Lira, (UG):- The Territorial police in Lira-City West Division are investigating circumstances under which a 27-year-old student of Buluge Technical School in Lira City got electrocuted on Wednesday morning.

Sam Okol, a second-year student of plumbing at the technical college was allegedly electrocuted from Junior quarter’s cell, Adyel Ward, Lira-City West Division on the 10th of April 2024 at around 10:15 hours.

Okol reportedly went to Adyel Children’s Park where construction work is ongoing by Abubakar Technical Services to do casual work.

Joshua Ojok reported to Lira-City West Division police station that Okol got electrocuted when he was up on a tank stand doing his work.

“Okol climbed safely and started work but we later heard him crying and he was immediately rushed to the hospital,” Ojok said.

The deceased was rescued and rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment but the medical team from there could not save his life and he was later pronounced dead.

A team of police officers from Lira-City West Division Police Station and a team of officers from Umeme office Lira visited the scene and documented the scene. 

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Police public relations officer for North Kyoga Region condoled with the bereaved family saying it is a very unfortunate incident.

‘’Preliminary findings indicate there was water logging on the said tank stand and electric wire running from the switch connected to the machine up to the tank stand where deceased was electrocuted,’’ Okema said.

He adds that ‘’the territorial police in Lira-City West Division are investigating circumstances under which the incident happened then we inform the public,’’

The body of the deceased was taken to the mortuary for postmortem and later handed over to the relatives for burial.
