Bukedea, Uganda: The Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament, Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among has urged Bukedea Comprehensive School students to value education, uphold discipline during the holidays, and maintain the school’s rising academic legacy.

Speaking as the first term of the 2025 academic year winds down, Among, who is the proprietor of Bukedea Comprehensive School, commended the 2024 UACE candidates for lifting the school’s profile, revealing that Bukedea Comprehensive ranked second nationally, a feat she wants current candidates to surpass.

“The candidates of 2024 UACE put our school on the map as we took the second position, but our target is to be on top. Those traditional schools you hear of in Kampala have the same teachers and facilities that we also have, so what you students need to do is concentrate,” she told students.

“Portray the good image of the school in the communities you come from,” she added, emphasizing personal discipline and academic focus as key to long-term success.

The Managing Director Bukedea Comprehensive, Prof. Jonas Gumisiriza, echoed her sentiments, urging parents to support students both academically and agriculturally during the holidays.

“Parents need to take advantage of their children helping them, but accept the recommendations they give because under the new curriculum, the learners have acquired more hands-on knowledge that should be turned into improvement of yields,” he said.

“Students, especially those in ‘A’ level, do a lot of research. Utilize the public libraries within your reach or maximally make the best use of the gadget a parent gives you for the assignment, not for studying unnecessary content on websites, especially TikTok, which most of you enjoy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Butebo District Chairperson Hon. Okurut James, who also graced the function, cautioned parents on the importance of monitoring their children’s behaviour during the break.

“Children are safer in schools than at home because schools have rules, regulations, and punishments attached. At home, they tend to engage in antisocial behaviours like smoking, drinking, unnecessary visits to relatives, and gatecrashing parties,” Okurut warned.

He further encouraged families to engage learners in church and constructive peer activities to prevent idleness and misconduct.

Mrs. Apolot Suzan Otai, the Pallisa District Probation Officer, also weighed in, condemning stigmatizing practices faced by girls upon school reopening. “The reason girls are always exposed to pregnancy checkups on reporting dates is rubbish allegations of possible pregnancy while at school,” she said.
