Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has called for a Solidarity Gathering for his chief bodyguard, Edward Ssebufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, who continues to be held under military detention by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
In a statement released on Friday morning, Kyagulanyi described Eddie Mutwe’s detention as illegal, dehumanizing, and emblematic of the broader repression faced by political activists in Uganda.
“Eddie Mutwe is all of us. Today it is him, tomorrow it could be any one of us,” Kyagulanyi stated. “Museveni’s brutal son is illegally holding, torturing, and dehumanizing him while he boasts about it. He says he is teaching Eddie Runyakore!”
Kyagulanyi emphasized that Eddie Mutwe represents more than himself, symbolizing all Ugandans who aspire for a just and free country, and urged citizens not to despair but to unite around shared values and renew their commitment to the struggle for freedom.
“Eddie represents more than himself. He represents all of us who dare to dream of a just and free country. As painful as these times are, we must not despair. All Ugandans of good conscience must come together and coalesce around the values that bring us together as a people. We must renew our commitment to fight on until Uganda is free,” he said.
Amid his bodyguard’s continued detention under the directives of CDF Muhoozi, Kyagulanyi announced a solidarity gathering scheduled for today at 2:00 PM at NUP Headquarters at Makerere-Kavule, where he has now called on all Ugandans of good conscience to join the non-partisan event to stand in solidarity with Mutwe and all political prisoners.
“Please join us today, 2:00 pm at Makerere – Kavule for a Solidarity Gathering. This is a non-partisan opportunity to unite. Friends of Eddie and other Ugandans of good conscience, let us come together in solidarity not just with Eddie but all political prisoners,” the former Presidential candidate and hopeful for the 2026 elections stated.
The detention of Mutwe has sparked widespread concern among human rights organizations and opposition leaders, who view it as part of a broader pattern of political repression in Uganda.
Kyagulanyi’s call for solidarity emulates the growing demand for accountability and the protection of civil liberties in the country.
The situation has drawn comparisons to the 2018 Arua incident, where Bobi Wine was arrested and allegedly tortured by security forces. In a recent tweet quoting Kyagulanyi’s Solidarity call post, Gen. Muhoozi referenced the event, warning that Kabobi, as he often refers to the NUP leader, will be the next to be apprehended.
“You are next, Kabobi! Remember Arua? How you were crying for Barbie to save you? This time I will have your balls,” Gen MK posted.
As the situation unfolds, the NUP and its supporters continue to advocate for the release of Mutwe and other political detainees, emphasizing the importance of unity and resilience in the face of oppression.
It remains to be seen if the security forces will seize the opposition party’s head offices at Kavule as they did on Monday, April 26, when the party was set to launch the Nationwide Youth Protest under its Youth wing.
