Kampala, Uganda: Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Friday confirmed having one Edward Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, the chief bodyguard to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, in detention, and vowed to only release him to his father, President Yoweri Museveni, when he orders so.
“I will only release Eddie to Mzee when he gives me the order. He would have learnt the history of NRA/UPDF by then. And will understand that NRM is a party that represents the whole country. It can never be defeated,” said General Muhoozi, who has been on a rampage with a series of provocative social media posts since last night.
He further added: “I don’t understand? Kabobi accepted my challenge. Now I’m practising on his so-called ‘Military commander’. Using him as a punching bag.”
Gen Muhoozi, who is widely known for his controversial posts on the X platform, confirmed being in full control of Eddie Mutwe when he released his half-naked photo, captioning it “Learning Runyankore”, a popular local dialect from the Ankole region, where the President and the entire First family come from.
“If Kabobi abuses anybody in my family again, he will imperil Eddie even more than he already has,” he added.
Reacting to the provocative posts, Mr Wine, who unsuccessfully contested for the Presidential seat in 2021 and is eyeing a comeback in the 2026 elections, posted, “Museveni’s son confirms that our brother Eddie Mutwe is being detained in his basement, ‘Learning Runyakore’. Time will tell.”
To which Gen Muhoozi replied: “Correct Kabobi! What will you do about it? Coward,” adding, “I captured NUP’s military commander like a grasshopper (Nsenene). If they keep on provoking us, we shall discipline them even more.”
In other posts on Thursday, the CDF said, “Eddie is looking very smart these days. The boys have tuned him well. He salutes Mzee’s picture every day before breakfast.”
“I can’t release Eddie now. It will be unfair to me and him. He is learning Runyankore, and we are both training for Kabobi.”
MK’s statements have sparked widespread concern among human rights activists and opposition figures, who view the detention as unlawful and politically motivated.
Eddie Mutwe, according to Bobi Wine, was forcefully abducted by people believed to be security operatives attached to the elite Special Forces Command (SFC) and pushed into a Toyota Hiace car, notoriously known as a drone, before he was whisked to an unknown location.
“Comrade Eddie Mutwe has just been violently abducted from Kiwango village in Mukono District by armed men in SFC uniform travelling in a Toyota van (“drone”),” the NUP Principal said in a post on his X platform on Sunday, April 27.
The opposition leader has consistently condemned the detention of his bodyguard, asserting that it is part of a broader pattern of political repression.
Legal experts have also weighed in, highlighting that the detention of Eddie Mutwe without formal charges or a court appearance violates constitutional provisions. The situation continues to evolve, with calls for transparency and adherence to the rule of law growing louder.
As Uganda approaches its 2026 general elections, the political climate remains tense, with the opposition alleging increased repression and intimidation by state security forces.
The continued detention of Eddie Mutwe is seen by many as a stark reminder of the challenges facing political activists in the East African country.
