SFC seal off NUP’s headquarters to block planned protest over Eddie Mutwe’s detention

Kampala, Uganda: Soldiers of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC) Friday cordoned off the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Kampala, ahead of the planned solidarity gathering organized by NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, to show support for his detained chief bodyguard, Edward Ssebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe.

Bobi Wine announced the military’s presence via social media, stating, “SFC soldiers have just raided and cordoned off our headquarters! Ugandans at home and abroad must rise up and protest against Museveni and his brutal son!”

The solidarity gathering, announced earlier on Friday, was intended to protest the continued incommunicado detention of Eddie Mutwe, who was reportedly abducted on April 27, 2025.

In the aftermath of events, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has publicly acknowledged ordering Eddie Mutwe’s arrest. In a series of provocative social media posts, Gen. Muhoozi stated on Friday, “I will only release Eddie to Mzee when he gives me the order.”

As tensions continue to soar, the Uganda Law Society has come to condemn Eddie Mutwe’s detention, describing it as part of a broader campaign to suppress dissent. In a Friday statement, the Lawyers’ body called for his immediate release and demanded an independent investigation into the allegations of torture and illegal detention.

This is not the first time NUP offices have been targeted. In February 2025, security forces raided the party’s headquarters, confiscating equipment and documents. Bobi Wine accused the government of attempting to cripple the opposition ahead of the 2026 elections.

As events continue to unfold, the international community watches closely. Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the shrinking political space in Uganda and the increasing use of military force against opposition figures.

The situation remains fluid, with NUP leaders urging supporters to remain peaceful but resolute in their demand for justice and democratic freedoms.
