KCCA vs Kataka (Lugogo)
Kitende, Uganda: Uganda Premier League leaders, Vipers Sports Club, will be looking to take a significant step toward clinching a fourth Stanbic Uganda Cup crown when they face reigning champions Kitara FC in the first leg of the 2024/25 semi-final on Saturday night at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The Venoms last lifted the prestigious trophy in the 2022/23 season, edging Police FC 1-0 in the final courtesy of a decisive strike from captain Milton Karisa.
With momentum building and silverware in sight, Vipers are keen to avenge last year’s painful exit, when they were knocked out on penalties by Kitara.
This season, the semi-final tie will again pit them against the formidable Kitara FC, but this time, Vipers host the opening leg before heading to Royals Park Stadium in Hoima for the return fixture in mid-May.
The Uganda Cup semifinals are contested over two legs, with the aggregate winner progressing to the final. Should the teams be level after both matches, a penalty shootout will decide the finalist.
Journey to the Semis
Vipers SC’s journey to this stage has been dominant and clinical. They kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tepa FC in the Round of 64, powered by a brace from defender Livingstone Mulondo. They followed up with a 2-0 win over Mbarara City, thanks to goals from Yunus Sentamu and Allan Okello.
In the Round of 16, Vipers dismantled Blacks Power FC 3-0, with Pedro Honjo Sukuya, Sentamu, and Mulondo all finding the back of the net. Their most notable win came in the quarterfinals, where Karisa struck late to seal a 1-0 win over arch-rivals SC Villa.
On the other hand, Kitara FC, the current holders, remain a well-drilled and dangerous side. Their title defence has been solid, capped by a gritty 1-0 win over BUL FC in the quarterfinals, a game that saw three red cards and tested their resilience.
In the second semi-final fixture, ten-time winners KCCA FC will welcome FUFA Big League outfit Kataka FC at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Sunday, May 4. The return leg will be played in Mbale, with both sides aiming to book a historic berth in the final.
This year’s Uganda Cup final, marking the 51st edition of the competition, will be staged at the new FUFA Kadiba Stadium in Kampala. It will be the first official match hosted at the state-of-the-art FIFA-funded facility, adding further significance to the occasion.
The tournament winner will not only claim the trophy but also secure a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, raising the stakes even higher as the semi-final battles commence.
