Vipers, KCCA, close in on Uganda Cup final after first leg wins

Kampala, Uganda: KCCA FC and Vipers SC have moved closer to booking places in the 2025 Stanbic Uganda Cup final after recording commanding victories in their semi-final first leg encounters.

At the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, the record 10-time Uganda Cup winner, KCCA FC, dispatched Big League outfit Kataka FC with a 3-0 victory, with goals coming from Emmanuel Anyama (brace) and Ashraf Mugume to give the Kasasiro Boys a dominant advantage ahead of the return leg.

KCCA were dominant from the onset, controlling possession and pressing Kataka into their own half. Anyama opened the scoring just before halftime after a well-executed team move, then doubled the lead minutes into the second half with a powerful effort from range. Mugume capitalised on a defensive error to slot home the third, leaving Kataka with a mountain to climb in the second leg scheduled for May 18.

Kataka, who had earlier eliminated Uganda Premier League sides URA FC and Police FC via penalty shootouts, struggled to cope with the pace and quality of the Lugogo side.

Meanwhile, in the earlier semi-final clash at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, Vipers SC edged holders Kitara FC 1-0 thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from substitute Yunus Junior Sentamu.

With the match seemingly headed for a goalless draw, Sentamu struck a stunning volley in the 94th minute to hand the Venoms a narrow but crucial lead.

Earlier in the game, Kitara’s Patrick Kaddu rattled the crossbar in what was a cagey and physical contest marred by tough tackles and multiple bookings.

The return legs, scheduled for the weekend of 17th May, will determine which two clubs will advance to the final of the 51st edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup, which will be held at the newly completed FUFA Kadiba Stadium in Kampala.
