Five dead in fiery car crash on Iganga-Tororo highway

Iganga, Uganda: At least five people have died and four others critically injured in yet another road crash that occurred Wednesday morning along the Tororo–Iganga Highway, marking the third major road tragedy in less than a week.

The accident occurred at around 5:30 am at Igogero Swamp, involving a Toyota Hiace (UBR 385J) and a trailer (UBB 838H/UAD 390J), according to Busoga East Police Spokesperson, SP Michael Kafayo.

Preliminary reports indicate the Hiace driver was overtaking the trailer when he spotted an oncoming vehicle. In a bid to avoid collision, he swerved back and rammed into the trailer. He died on the spot, along with four passengers.

Four survivors, one female and three males, are currently receiving treatment at Bugiri Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the hospital mortuary for autopsy examination and report.

The nasty crash comes just days after multiple passengers died when a YY Coaches bus overturned and caught fire along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District on Monday evening, an incident authorities said was a result of the driver losing control at a sharp bend.

Last week on Saturday, the country was left in shock after Rajiv Ruparelia, son of businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, died in a crash on the Munyonyo–Entebbe Expressway. He was cremated on Monday in Lugogo.

The businessman’s death prompted public outcry over road safety and the responsibilities of contractors at the site. Among those is retired UPDF General Henry Tumukunde, who attended Monday’s vigil and emphasized the need for accountability. “Those who don’t do their work and cause death should certainly be punished.”

Kampala Central Division Mayor, Mr. Salim Uhuru, highlighted the lack of road signs at construction sites, noting, “Road users must be protected,” while Senior Presidential Advisor on Creatives, musician Eddy Kenzo, criticized road contractors for hazards like unmarked stone dust, which reduces visibility.

Inspector General of Government, Ms. Beti Kamya, remarked that the accident should serve as a wake-up call for road contractors to ensure safety measures are in place.
