Kibuku, Uganda: The Mothers’ Union in Kibuku has led a large-scale community clean-up ahead of Saturday’s Mother Mary’s Day celebrations, where Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja is expected as Guest of Honour at Kibuku Archdeaconry.
The clean-up operation, held across Tirinyi Town Council and along the Mbale-Tirinyi Highway, mobilised residents, traders, and local leaders in preparation for the national religious event expected to draw thousands.
Jane Narapa Wairagala, Chairperson of the Mothers’ Union in Kibuku Archdeaconry, said the initiative was driven by a desire to showcase unity, discipline, and community pride.
“This clean-up shows what we can achieve when we come together as a community,” said Wairagala. “We want to welcome the Prime Minister to a town that is not only physically clean but spiritually and socially united.”
Volunteers swept roads, cleared drainage systems, and collected rubbish from key business zones and public spaces in Tirinyi. Residents described the campaign as both timely and transformative.
The Mother Mary’s Day celebration, an annual Church of Uganda event, honours the contribution of women to the church and society. This year’s edition will highlight themes of Christian values, family development, and social responsibility.
“A clean environment is not just for special guests,” added Mrs. Wairagala. “It’s for the good of all of us every day.”
Local leaders hailed the Mothers’ Union for championing civic responsibility, while traders said the exercise boosted the town’s image ahead of the high-profile religious function.
The Prime Minister’s attendance is expected to underscore government appreciation of faith-based initiatives in fostering unity, cleanliness, and community-led development.
