Buddo SS crowned 2025 USSSA champions after penalty win over Kitende

Ngora, Uganda: Buddo Secondary School emerged champions of the 2025 USSSA Boys Football Championship after edging St Mary’s Kitende 6-5 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout on Wednesday at Ngora High School playground.

The final, which ended goalless after regular time, drew thousands of spectators, including Minister of State for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang, also MP for Ngariam County, who officiated the medal ceremony alongside USSSA officials.

The match pitted Uganda’s two football powerhouses, Buddo SS and St Mary’s Kitende, in a tense, tactical contest that lived up to its billing. Both sides created chances but failed to find the net, with defenses and goalkeepers dominating proceedings.

In the shootouts, both teams converted their opening five penalties with precision. Kitende’s Denis Kisiriko, Simon Mukisa, Ronald Kigoye, Ashraf Kyakuwa, and Leonard Kasanya all found the back of the net. Buddo’s Martin Bate, Aron Okello, Shakur Babi, Roy Olala, and Abasa Kisambira responded in kind.

The turning point came when Kitende’s Santos Agok missed the sixth penalty, his effort saved brilliantly by Buddo goalkeeper Owen Walugembe. Ronald Ssegirinya stepped up for Buddo and confidently slotted home the winner, sealing Buddo’s third USSSA national football title.

Buddo’s Owen Mukisa was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, while Rodgers Obale of Kitende won the Best Goalkeeper award.

The Top Scorer accolade went to Mubaraka Tumwine of Masaka SS, who scored 10 goals during the competition.

The final brought the curtains down on the 2025 USSSA Ball Games I, held across Ngora and Bukedea districts, featuring schools from across the country in disciplines including basketball, rugby, handball, and athletics.

Elsewhere, St Noa Girls’ School clinched both Girls’ Football and Girls’ Basketball titles. Amus College were crowned Boys’ Basketball champions, while Ntare School and Wampeewo Ntaake took home the Boys’ and Girls’ Handball titles respectively.
