Sironko, Uganda: The Aspiring Woman MP for Sironko District, Sharifa Mariam Maruti, on Thursday commissioned a newly constructed borehole at Bunanimi Cell in Southern Ward, a bold intervention aimed at addressing the town council’s persistent water crisis.
The borehole, which now serves market vendors, garage operators, and nearby households, is the first of four that Maruti says has lobbied for under her broader agenda to expand access to safe and clean drinking water across Sironko.
“This is just the beginning,” Maruti declared. “We are determined to ensure that every community in Sironko has a reliable source of clean water. I was promised four boreholes—we have started with this one, and I will continue lobbying for more.”
She urged the community to take collective ownership of the project and ensure its sustainability. “This borehole belongs to us. Let’s maintain it well so that we can receive more support. We’ve just started.”
The project aligns with Maruti’s wider development blueprint for the district. According to Bugisu Intellectual Forum, a civic platform that tracks politics and development across Bugisu, Maruti is advocating for improved education systems, increased medical supplies, and enhanced infrastructure in hard-to-reach areas.
“We need to uplift our schools, advocate for better healthcare, and improve accessibility, especially in geographically difficult areas. These are vital steps for promoting economic growth,” she noted.
Local leaders and residents hailed the project as timely. John Wadeya, a resident, commended Maruti’s commitment, calling the borehole a “vital step in tackling the water crisis.”
Joseph Magunya echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the value of clean water to the town’s development.
Abasa Mafabi added: “This borehole will serve many people, from the market to the garage. We pray for her success so she can do even more.”
During the same engagement, Maruti also unveiled her campaign office in Sironko Town Council, inviting residents to use it as a development hub.
“As a qualified lawyer, I also plan to support residents who face legal challenges, including those imprisoned at Mutufu Prison, to ensure they receive justice,” she pledged.
Maruti’s campaign is increasingly being defined by community-focused service delivery, setting a tone for grassroots engagement ahead of the 2026 general elections.
