Barcelona, ESP: Barcelona were Thursday crowned 2024/25 LaLiga champions after beating city rivals Espanyol 2-0 at the RCDE Stadium, to secure the club’s 28th league title and complete the domestic treble in Hansi Flick’s debut season.
Sensational teenager, Lamine Yamal, once again delivered on the big occasion, breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute with a sharp finish after a dominant but goalless first half.
The 17-year-old winger, who has been a revelation under Flick, then turned provider deep into stoppage time, teeing up Fermin Lopez in the 90+5th minute to seal the win, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling culers.
The Blaugrana’s triumph came just a day after title rivals Real Madrid edged Mallorca 2-1 to momentarily close the gap to four points.
But the result in Cornella stretched Barça’s lead back to seven with only six points left to play for, mathematically ending Madrid’s title hopes.
In addition to LaLiga, the German tactician has already led Barcelona to victory in the Spanish Supercopa and Copa del Rey, both against fierce rivals Madrid, completing a historic domestic treble in his first year in charge.
Hansi Flick’s magic?
The 28th LaLiga title on the night capped a stunning domestic campaign for Flick, who was appointed last summer following the departure of Xavi Hernandez.
Despite their domestic dominance, Barça fell short in Europe, bowing out of the UEFA Champions League at the semifinal stage against Inter Milan. However, their run to the last four marked their best European showing since 2019 and signaled progress on the continental stage.
Flick inherited a young, evolving squad and immediately instilled a high-octane, attacking style of play. Barcelona stormed to the top of the table early, winning 11 of their first 12 matches, including a 4-0 demolition of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in October.
A midseason slump saw them suffer four defeats in seven games between November and December, allowing both Madrid and Atlético to leapfrog them temporarily. But from January onward, Flick’s side rediscovered their rhythm and have gone unbeaten in league play throughout 2025.
Last weekend’s dramatic 4-3 Clásico win, their fourth triumph over Real Madrid this season, all but sealed the title, and Thursday night’s derby victory just made it official.
Yamal, Lewandowski, and Raphinha have been monumental for Flick’s attack that has scored at least four or more goals in 13 league games this season. The return to form and fitness of midfield maestro Pedri also helped stabilize the team during their title push.
The 2024/25 LaLiga crown is Barcelona’s second in three years and the 20th in their storied history, reinforcing their resurgence under new leadership.
