Pader, Uganda: Hundreds of youths in Pader District have taken the lead in combating climate change, thanks to a bold tree planting initiative spearheaded by Aruu North MP Santa Okot that has already distributed over 30,000 seedlings across more than 50 parishes.
Launched in 2022, the program employs over 20 young people in nursery bed management and environmental restoration, offering them vital skills in sustainable agriculture while addressing rampant deforestation in Northern Uganda.
“I started this initiative after realizing the massive destruction of trees in our region,” Hon. Santa Okot said. “We had to act fast to protect our environment and create job opportunities for our youth. Tree planting is not just conservation; it’s a form of youth empowerment.”
The seedlings, mostly pine, teak, eucalyptus, and indigenous fruit trees like fene and soursop, are being raised at the Watemu Gum nursery bed located at Atanga Mission. Originally established in 2015 as a profit-making venture, the nursery now raises trees for free distribution to households with land to plant them.
John Olak Patrick, a beneficiary, received 2,000 eucalyptus seedlings and planted them across five acres. “They are doing well, and it’s one and a half years now,” he said.
Onen David, the nursery manager, said the project is rapidly expanding. “We give seedlings to both individuals and organized groups, depending on need. Over 50 parishes have received trees so far,” he noted.
Hon. Okot said she remains proud of the progress made. “Our youths are learning practical skills and playing a direct role in reversing environmental degradation. This is the kind of local solution we need to build climate resilience.”
