Wakiso, Uganda: Just less than two weeks since the tragic death of city businessman and rally driver Rajiv Ruparelia, another car crash was recorded on Saturday at the notorious Busabala Flyover on Entebbe-Munyonyo Expressway in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District.
The incident, according to preliminary reports, involved a woman driving a Subaru Legacy who reportedly lost control and rammed into the same set of concrete barriers that claimed Rajiv’s life on May 3, 2025.
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying moment as the vehicle slammed into the barriers at high speed before coming to a halt. Good Samaritans quickly rushed to the scene and worked frantically to extract the woman from the mangled car. Fortunately, she survived the crash with no serious injuries.
“It was a minor accident. There were no serious injuries, but I’m yet to get more details,” said Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura in a brief statement on Sunday.
The crash has reignited public concern over the safety of the Busabala Flyover, with many calling on the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and local authorities to urgently review the design and install visible signage or safety enhancements.
Rajiv Ruparelia, the late son of businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, died at the same spot in a fatal crash while driving a Porsche 911 Turbo.
His death sparked a national outpouring of grief and prompted road safety advocates to question the structural and lighting conditions at the flyover.
With Uganda continuing to register an alarming rise in road traffic fatalities, over 5,100 lives lost in 2024 alone, the recurrence of accidents at the same poorly maintained stretch of road is being seen as a tragic symbol of systemic neglect.
