Two dead, four hospitalized in suspected poisoning over land dispute in Kalungu

Kalungu, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Greater Masaka have launched investigations into a case of suspected poisoning of a family, which claimed the lives of two children and left four others hospitalized in critical condition.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening at the home of Henry Kaganzi in Bulenzi B Village, Lwabenge Sub County, Kalungu District.

The deceased have been identified as 6-year-old Esther Nattabi and her younger sister, 4-year-old Tabitha Nantaayi. Kaganzi’s wife and three other family members were rushed to St. Monica Birongo Health Centre after consuming what is believed to be poisoned food.

“I was shocked to find my family crying for help after eating food which is said to have been laced with poison. I raised an alarm and residents helped me rush them to the hospital,” said Kaganzi.

The attack has sparked outrage in the community, with Lwabenge Sub County Chairperson David Ssegawa calling for swift justice. He confirmed that authorities are probing a possible land-related motive.

“There are allegations that the family is entangled in a land ownership dispute, which needs to be investigated,” Ssegawa said.

The Police Spokesperson for Greater Masaka, Mr Twaha Kasirye, condemned the incident and confirmed the arrest of two suspects identified as Vincent Jjingo and his wife, Agnes Nabuuma, who are believed to be connected to the case.

“Police investigation into the matter has kicked off, and the suspects are currently in custody to assist with investigations,” said Kasirye.
