Kampala, Uganda: FUFA, Uganda’s football governing body, on Thursday unveiled a new era in local football with the introduction of ‘Margherita’, a bold, symbolic, and artistically crafted Uganda Premier League trophy set to replace the outgoing silverware that has served the league since 2015.
The outgoing Uganda Premier League trophy, first introduced nearly a decade ago, was functional but minimal in both design and symbolism. Simple in structure and conservative in height, the previous trophy lacked the storytelling and national imagery that fans and stakeholders longed for.
Over its lifespan, it was handed out to league winners, including KCCA FC, Vipers SC, and Express FC, marking the close of each domestic season without much visual evolution.

Now, FUFA has raised the bar with Margherita, a trophy designed not just to crown champions, but to capture the essence of Uganda’s football spirit and its breathtaking geography.
Standing at exactly 511 millimetres, the trophy’s height is a direct nod to Margherita Peak, Uganda’s highest point on the Rwenzori ranges, sitting 5.11 kilometres above sea level.
Unlike its predecessor, Margherita is steeped in symbolism and modern craftsmanship. Its structure mimics a vertically stretched football, portraying the upward climb of teams competing to reach the pinnacle of Ugandan football.

A crescent arc across the top symbolizes a young moon, signifying renewal, fierce competition, and evolving ambition. The surface maintains the integrity of the sport’s design heritage, incorporating hexagonal and half-pentagonal panels.
The trunk, for the new trophy, is elegantly finished with dimpled vertical lines, echoing the stretch of a ball in motion and tying the trophy’s body together with a subtle narrative unity.
At the base, form meets function with a semi-spherical stand textured with ball dimples, anchored by two defined tiers.
The top tier bears engraved ‘FUFA’ and ‘Uganda Premier League’ insignias, while a glossy black base adds depth, elegance, and stability.

Crafted from fine silver, the new trophy is a celebration of ambition, heritage, and identity. Every element, from the 511mm height to the young-moon curve, tells a story that transcends sport.
For FUFA, this isn’t just a change in hardware. It’s a rebranding of vision, honouring the heights clubs strive for while projecting Uganda’s football image with pride and purpose.
This weekend, Vipers SC will be the first club to lift Margherita, ushering in a new chapter of triumphs, stories, and silverware that finally reflects the soul of the Ugandan game.
