NRM clears Wambogo as duly elected Mbale District Party Chairperson

Mbale, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has upheld the election of Moses Wambogo as the duly elected district chairperson for Mbale, dismissing all petitions that had been filed against his victory in the May 23 party polls.

Wambogo secured a commanding 163 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Abdallah Naleka, who polled just 16 votes. A third candidate, Watenyeli, also lost by a significant margin during the elections held at the School for the Deaf in Busoba.

Discontented rivals challenged the outcome, with Naleka and others questioning the credibility of the process and alleging that Wambogo had not formally resigned from his public office prior to participating in the election.

However, in a reconciliation meeting held on Wednesday at the NRM national secretariat in Kampala, chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the party’s electoral commission found the petitions lacked sufficient evidence and cleared Wambogo to proceed in his new leadership role.

“The NRM Electoral Commission has considered all petitions and complaints on the above matter, and held a meeting with all stakeholders on 28th May 2025. The NRM Electoral Commission has been presented with evidence of the resignation of Mr. Moses Wambogo from his position as Assistant RDC with effect from 23rd April 2025,” Dr Tanga wrote in the May 28 letter.

“In the premises, Mr. Moses Wambogo was validly elected and the result as declared stands,” the NRM EC boss declared.

Wambogo welcomed the ruling and extended an olive branch to his opponents. “It’s now time to bring everyone together, consolidate our support, and work towards a resounding victory for President Museveni and all NRM leaders in the 2026 elections,” he said, urging former rivals to rejoin the mobilization drive.
