‘Back apology with national reforms’ – Amb Kambula tells Museveni

Kampala, Uganda: Peace Service Ambassador Milton Kambula has challenged President Yoweri Museveni to back his recent public prayer of repentance with concrete reforms that address Uganda’s systemic challenges, warning that without action, the gesture will amount to political theatre.

Kambula’s remarks come days after President Museveni, alongside First Lady Mama Janet Museveni, issued a public apology to Ugandans during prayers led by his daughter, Natasha Karugire Kololo Independence Grounds, seeking divine forgiveness on behalf of the nation.

While the prayer attracted nationwide attention for its symbolism of humility and contrition, Kambula insists that Uganda needs more than spiritual gestures.

“If things don’t change, this prayer will be just a form of comedy for political gains,” Kambula said, cautioning that genuine repentance must be reflected through tangible change. “When the child of God says, ‘God, I have changed, I’ll never steal again,’ he or she must change course so that God can bless him and his generation.”

The ambassador laid out a comprehensive call for action, beginning with the fight against corruption, which he said continues to weaken Uganda’s foundations. He called for an immediate end to abductions and kidnappings and urged President Museveni to bridge political divides by engaging the opposition in a spirit of unity and national interest.

Amb Kambula also pushed for infrastructural development, demanding new district-linked railways, improved roads, and reliable electricity, saying such investments are essential for economic transformation.

On education, the ambassador emphasized the need for a skills-based curriculum rooted in cultural values and aligned with job market demands. “Medicine in the hospitals, new hospitals rising up,” he stressed, highlighting the urgency of fixing Uganda’s broken healthcare system.

He further advocated for exporting Uganda’s organic products, calling on the government to promote local goods globally to drive economic growth and end poverty.

On the environment, Amb Kambula warned that failure to restore Uganda’s forests and swamps would compromise the future of the next generation.

He envisioned a Uganda capable of standing alongside global superpowers, culturally, economically, and technologically. “Now that you have asked for forgiveness, Mr. President, please know that now the work has just begun,” he declared.

Kambula concluded by urging the President to turn his prayer into a roadmap for national renewal. “Let’s see that those blessings now start producing fruits that the young people can feed on and guarantee the future of this country. If those things are not done, your prayer for forgiveness as a head of state and the first lady will be at bay.”
