Kampala, Uganda: Victoria University Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga has dismissed a viral audio clip attributed to Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among as a fabricated piece of artificial intelligence-generated misinformation.
Prof. Muganga described the clip, which has been widely circulated on TikTok and other social media platforms, as a dangerous example of how AI can be exploited by malicious actors to spread falsehoods and damage reputations.
“The audio is fabricated. Please disregard it in its entirety,” he stated in a post on his official platforms.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the circulating audio clearly demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be misused by individuals with bad intentions to deceive, manipulate, and spread falsehoods.”
Prof. Muganga, a vocal advocate for the responsible use of emerging technologies, revealed that he had personally run the clip through AI detection tools. The results, he said, confirmed the audio was fake and digitally manipulated to imitate Speaker Among’s voice.
“It appears that malicious actors have trained AI systems to imitate the voice of the Rt. Hon. Speaker and used it to create false and hateful content. This is not just a misuse of technology—it is a deliberate act of character assassination.”
The university don emphasized the need for urgent regulatory safeguards and ethical AI deployment frameworks in Uganda.
“Uganda must embrace Artificial Intelligence to drive national development. At the same time, we must urgently establish clear regulations, ethical guidelines, and safeguards to prevent the harmful use of these innovations.”
He added that AI should be a force for good, not a tool to divide the nation or destroy reputations, and expressed solidarity with the Speaker:
“To the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, please stay strong. Many of us stand with you and strongly condemn this attack. Your voice and leadership are needed now more than ever to help build national systems that ensure AI benefits Uganda rather than harms it.”
Earlier, the Parliament of Uganda issued a formal statement confirming that the viral audio is fake. “We have been made aware of an audio clip circulating on social media, attributed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker Anitah Among. The clip is fake and unfounded,” the statement read.
The fake clip is part of a growing global trend of “deepfake” audio and video content used to mislead the public, stir unrest, or defame individuals.
Speaker Among has in the past warned about the dangers of misinformation. In June 2022, she announced her intention to champion legislation aimed at curbing the spread of false information, especially in the media space.
