Kapelebyong, Uganda: The Government of Uganda has extended multi-million-shilling support to farmers in Kapelebyong District through the provision of micro-scale irrigation kits under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer program.
The kits, valued at UGX 191,579,841 and supplied by Rivan Engineering Services Limited, comprise ten 5,000-litre water reservoirs, ten 740-watt solar panels, and essential piping systems, among other components.
John William Ejiet, the Kapelebyong District Production Officer, said the initiative is a vital intervention to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture in the area.
He revealed that while the government covered 75% of the cost, farmers contributed the remaining 25%, which he described as a clear demonstration of their commitment to sustainable farming.
Shaineh Nelson, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Kapelebyong, welcomed the timely intervention and expressed confidence that the kits will significantly uplift rural livelihoods.
“We have always relied on rain-fed agriculture, but now, with this system in place, our farmers can cultivate crops year-round, even during dry seasons,” Shaineh said.

He further noted that the micro-scale irrigation model holds potential to combat youth unemployment by encouraging the youth to actively engage in agribusiness.
“Our focus will now shift toward changing the mindset of our communities to ensure that everyone becomes a proactive participant in improving their livelihoods,” he added.
Under the program, farmers not only provide a 25% co-funding toward the kits, but are also required to secure land and water sources for installation, an approach aimed at fostering community ownership and long-term sustainability.
Kapelebyong, part of Uganda’s cattle corridor, is increasingly vulnerable to climate shocks. Authorities believe micro-scale irrigation could transform farming in the region, particularly by promoting high-value crops to strengthen food security and local economies.
