Buyende, Uganda: Residents of Bukungu Town Council in Buyende District have appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to extend support to St. Theresa Bukungu Primary School, the site that hosted him during the 2024 World AIDS Day commemorations, as he prepares for a fresh visit to the district this weekend.
Led by the Chairperson Kiwantaama cell in Bukungu town council, where the School is located, Mr. Waja Wahabu says the President visited them but didn’t leave anything tangible to benefit the school despite the struggling condition of the school without staff quarters, latrines, desks, among others, yet the school enrollment is high.
“We hosted the president during the commemoration of AIDS Day, and I commended him for whatever he has done for us. I also reported to him about the challenges of this school, but the President didn’t leave anything behind,” Mr. Waja said, stressing that this school serves the whole town council with over 1000 pupils.
DailyExpress has established that Bukungu town council, which is one of the fishing communities in the district, has only one Primary School serving the entire area amid challenges which have since crippled the academic progress of the school and the entire area.
“This school is badly off without suitable staff quarters; we don’t have pit latrines, and the children sit on the ground because we don’t have enough seats. We ask President Museveni to work on this school because it’s the most challenging concern in this area,” Waja added.
The renewed call comes ahead of Museveni’s planned return to Buyende District on Saturday, June 7, 2025, where he will preside over a thanksgiving ceremony at Iringa Primary School in Nkondo Sub-county, Budiope West.
The event is being organized by Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, who recently declared her bid to contest for the Budiope West parliamentary seat.
The locals in Bukungu say they also need more schools to support education in the fishing community, given the fact that children use excuses of the long distances to the single primary school serving the area and end up dropping out of school.
During the previous World AIDS Day celebrations, Buyende Woman MP Hon. Nakato Mary Annet also used the occasion to present a comprehensive plea to the President.
She pointed at the struggling education sector, where she advocated for more seed schools, the establishment of an Ice plant in Bukungu, and financial assistance to the fishing communities, supporting the health sector, as well as renovating some government establishments like schools and health centers.
President Museveni’s response to the growing cries for support remains to be seen as he returns to the region this weekend.
