Kampala, Uganda: Celebrated media personality and pioneer Ugandan deejay Michael Benjamin Owor, popularly known as DJ Bush Baby, is dead.
The 50-year-old veteran media guru was discovered lifeless on Thursday morning, June 5, after concerned relatives broke into his private studio in Entebbe where he had gone missing since Tuesday.
The cause of death was still unknown by press time, pending a postmortem report by medical authorities.
DJ Bush Baby was a trailblazer in Uganda’s media and music industry, widely credited for revolutionizing radio and television entertainment across East Africa.
His voice and presence on platforms like Urban TV, NBS TV, and STV shaped the careers of countless DJs and presenters over two decades.
In 2021, DJ Bush Baby suffered a life-threatening fall into a manhole at his home, which left him with a fractured pelvic bone and internal injuries.
He underwent surgery at URO Care Hospital and later spoke openly about the experience, saying the ordeal brought him closer to God.
Despite his health struggles, he continued mentoring young talent through initiatives like Salute the DJ and remained active in media. In 2024, he joined XRadio in Tanzania, where he hosted a popular weekly show streamed online across East Africa.
Born in 1975 in Entebbe, Micheal Owor began his media journey in the late 1990s at Radio Uganda’s Green Channel, later rebranded as Magic FM. He went on to help set up Kiss FM in Tanzania, and later worked at East African Radio and EATV, becoming a major cultural influencer beyond Uganda’s borders.
Tributes poured in from across the creative industry Thursday afternoon, with many describing his death as a devastating blow to Uganda’s media and music fraternity.
Fellow entertainers hailed his generosity, creativity, and unwavering commitment to nurturing young talent.
Funeral arrangements will be communicated by the family in due course.
