Budaka, Uganda: A fire outbreak early Tuesday morning at Namengo Boys Primary School in Budaka District caused extensive property damage but left no injuries, according to police and school officials.
The blaze broke out at around 5:45 AM when a pupil, Wasswa Filex, entered the dormitory to retrieve a book and noticed smoke and sparks coming from an electrical wire in the corner of the room. He promptly raised the alarm, triggering a rapid response from fellow pupils and school administrators.
The School Headteacher, Mr Asaba Albert and the staff swiftly mobilized using fire extinguishers and water to contain the fire. However, the flames destroyed several mattresses, bedding, suitcases, books, and other personal items belonging to the pupils.
The students were reportedly in early morning preparations at the time, sparing any casualties.
Speaking to DailyExpress, ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the Police Spokesperson for Bukedi North, confirmed that police have opened a case under CRB 215/2025.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. “We have recorded statements from eyewitnesses and first responders. The District CID Officer has visited the scene and is continuing with the investigations,” ASP Kyempasa stated.
The local community and school administration have since rallied to support affected pupils as inquiries continue.
