Iganga, Uganda: Police in Iganga District have launched investigations into a fatal motorcycle road crash that claimed the lives of a woman and her two children at the Bunya roundabout along Saza Road in Iganga town on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Mutesi Sumayah, a resident of Buluza Village in Nakigo Sub-county, and her two children, Isabirye Miracle and Nadia Rashimu, 8, who died on the spot after the motorcycle they were travelling on was rammed by a Tata lorry.
According to preliminary findings, the fatal crash occurred when a Tata lorry, registration number UBD 434F, knocked a motorcycle, UGC 608S, that was carrying the mother and her children. The two children suffered severe head injuries and died instantly.
Busoga East Police Spokesperson SP Kafayo Michael confirmed the incident and said that both the lorry driver and the boda boda rider were yet to be identified by press time. “It is reported that the vehicle and motorcycle were moving in the same direction before the rider suddenly turned from the left to the right route of the roundabout and the lorry crashed into them,” SP Kafayo said.
SP Kafayo further revealed that while the children died at the scene, the mother sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Iganga General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to DailyExpress disclosed that the boda boda rider had initially intended to use the left route toward Iganga Saza Grounds, but changed direction toward Buluza and Mayuge after being prompted by one of the passengers.
The sudden switch is believed to have caused the fatal impact as the oncoming lorry rammed into the motorcycle.
Authorities are currently hunting for the boda boda rider who reportedly fled the scene after sustaining visible injuries during the crash. The lorry and motorcycle have since been towed to Iganga Central Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as investigations continue.
Iganga Central Division Chairperson Mr. Kasimba Abubakar, who was among the first responders, confirmed the mother’s death and commended the community for their swift efforts in helping victims before emergency teams arrived.
SP Kafayo urged all road users to exercise caution and avoid sudden, reckless decisions that can lead to fatal accidents. “Let us remain vigilant and protect lives,” he said.
