Nwoya, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Nwoya District have recovered a Sub-Machine Gun (SMG) rifle that had allegedly been used to terrorize residents, following an intelligence-led operation in Paminyai Sub-county over the weekend.
According to a Tuesday police statement, “On June 14, 2025, Nwoya Police officers conducted an operation in Paminyai Subcounty, Nwoya District, resulting in the recovery of an SMG rifle that had been used to terrorize the local community and surrounding areas.”
The operation was launched after community informants in Nyamukino and Gotapwoyo villages alerted police about a suspicious white Ipsium vehicle, registration number UAP 032E, which had been intercepted by residents while allegedly transporting 11 suspected stolen goats.
The prime suspect, whom police identified as Omony Dicken, a 28-year-old broker from Pece-Laroo Division in Gulu City, was arrested at the scene and cooperated with authorities during interrogation, leading to the recovery of an SMG rifle.
“During interrogation, the suspect led officers to the recovery of the SMG rifle, which was found hidden in the bush near an electric pole in Purongo Subcounty, Nwoya District,” police said.
The police statement added, “Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspects and accomplices involved in the case.”
Authorities praised the role played by vigilant community members in facilitating the recovery. “We appreciate the community’s cooperation, which was instrumental in recovering the weapon,” the statement concluded.
Security agencies have since warned of an uptick in organized livestock theft rings across Northern Uganda and reaffirmed commitment to dismantling criminal networks through collaboration with residents.
