The 2024/25 FUFA Big League season concluded in high drama on its final day, with Calvary FC, Gaddafi FC, and Buhimba United Saints securing promotion to the 2025/26 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season after one of the most competitive title and relegation races in recent memory.
Five teams entered the final round in contention for the three available promotion slots, while five others scrambled to avoid relegation alongside Booma FC.
In the decisive West Nile derby at Midigo Primary School in Yumbe, Calvary FC edged Paidha Black Angels 1-0 in a rain-delayed encounter, clinching the Big League title with 52 points. The victory marked Calvary’s return to top-flight football, with the team set to officially receive the championship trophy on Sunday, June 22, 2025.
In Mbale, Gaddafi FC secured second place with a commanding 3-0 win over Kataka FC on a waterlogged pitch. Goals from Jonathan Mbula, Thomas Kakaire, and Frank Kalanda sealed their promotion as they ended the season with 50 points.
Meanwhile, Buhimba United Saints held Kiyinda Boys to a 0-0 draw at Barthlem Playground in Kiwenda. The single point was sufficient to take them to 50 points as well, edging out the competition on goal difference to seal the final promotion spot.
Blacks Power FC, despite a 2-0 win over Busoga United courtesy of an Innocent Maduka brace, finished with 49 points, just one shy of the promotion threshold.
RELEGATION DRAMA
At the opposite end of the table, Kigezi Home Boyz escaped relegation with a narrow 1-0 win over MYDA FC in Kabale, thanks to Joseph Sseremba’s crucial goal.
MYDA FC, Busoga United, and Booma FC were officially relegated to the regional league following the final matchday.
Even Arua Hill SC’s emphatic 10-0 demolition of Booma FC in Masindi couldn’t salvage their survival hopes, as other results went against them.
In one of the highest-scoring games of the day, Kaaro Karungi defeated Ntugasaze 6-3 at Kyamate playground in Ntungamo, ending the season on a high in a nine-goal thriller.
