Kampala, Uganda: Popular singer Alexander Bagonza, better known as A Pass, has come out strongly to explain why he has no interest in listening to or performing any of fellow musician Lil Pazo’s songs, bluntly describing them as “bad music.”
Speaking in a recent interview, A Pass said that despite maintaining a cordial relationship with Lil Pazo as a friend, he draws a clear line when it comes to artistic standards.
“I am good friends with Lil Pazo, but that doesn’t take away the reality and the fact that he has bad music,” A Pass said.
Known for his outspoken views on the Ugandan music industry, A Pass has consistently criticised musicians who focus on churning out hit songs without caring about the quality or longevity of their craft.
According to A Pass, Lil Pazo has never produced any music he personally considers worth his time or respect.
“Lil Pazo’s songs are so bad I can’t sing them. I don’t even have to play or listen to them. To be honest, I can’t name any of his songs because I have never listened to them,” he said, adding that he prefers music with meaning and quality.
The “Tuli Kubigere” singer further emphasised that, for him, consuming music is not about hype or popularity but about substance and impact.
It should be noted that in Uganda’s entertainment scene, many artists rely heavily on hit singles to secure bookings and earn income through live performances, regardless of the artistic merit of their music.
A Pass’ remarks have reignited debate about whether commercial success should be the primary yardstick for musical relevance or whether more emphasis should be placed on artistic quality.
