Luwero, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has called on Ugandan Christians to move beyond an exclusive focus on spiritual salvation and instead embrace economic empowerment as a vital component of meaningful transformation.

Speaking through Vice President Maj. Jessica Alupo, during a Thanksgiving ceremony in honor of Bishop Wilson Kisekka of Luwero Diocese, President Museveni emphasized that a singular preoccupation with faith risks perpetuating poverty and socio-economic stagnation.

“While spiritual pursuits are essential, they must be complemented by addressing physical needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare,” Museveni said in a message read by the Vice President.

The President underscored that Jesus Christ himself was not only a spiritual figure but also an active contributor to his community, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and working as a carpenter.

He argued that true fulfillment in life cannot be achieved through subsistence living alone and urged church leaders to inspire their congregations to strive for improved livelihoods.

“We must all work to build financial stability,” he said, noting that modern prosperity hinges on embracing profitable sectors such as commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT.

Museveni commended Luwero Diocese for its strong collaboration with the government in promoting development and urged continued partnership to uplift communities across the country.

He called on all religious institutions to integrate socio-economic progress into their ministries to create a balance between faith and tangible improvements in quality of life.
