Kampala, Uganda: The Police at Kajjansi have arrested 48 suspects in a coordinated operation targeting crime hotspots in Lweza and surrounding areas, Kampala Metropolitan Police South has confirmed.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the intelligence-led crackdown was conducted by the territorial police at Kajjansi Division in the early hours of Monday, July 1.
“At approximately 3:30 a.m., a team of officers carried out routine patrols following actionable information regarding criminal elements who habitually gather, gamble, and loiter in known crime-prone areas of Lweza,” ASP Owoyesigyire said in a Tuesday police statement.
During the operation, Owoyesigyire says, 18 youths were arrested in Muchanga, 20 in Kajjansi, and 10 at Sanyu Brothel, one of the mapped crime hotspots. Preliminary findings indicate that many of the youths pose as bottle and dustbin collectors but use the cover of night to attack homes and rob residents of valuables.
Among the recovered exhibits were two pliers, three testas, and three knives suspected to have been used in housebreaking, all of which have been secured as evidence while statements were recorded from complainants and arresting officers.

“All 48 suspects were detained at Bwebajja and Lubowa Police Stations pending further investigations and subsequent arraignment,” ASP Owoyesigyire said. He added that most of those arrested were aged between 17 and 23 years.
Police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue sharing timely information that can help disrupt criminal networks.
“The Police remain committed to protecting communities by disrupting criminal networks and ensuring those involved are brought to justice,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
