Kampala, Uganda: Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko has confirmed his intention to contest for the presidency in Uganda’s 2026 general elections, declaring that accessible leadership and grassroots connection will define his bid.
Nsereko, who has represented Kampala Central in Parliament since 2011, announced last year that he would not seek re-election as MP, arguing that it was time to give young leaders a chance to showcase their abilities. He said his focus has now shifted to the highest office in the country.
“Being an easy reach for every citizen in Uganda is what makes my bid for the presidential seat very important,” Nsereko said. He explained that staying accessible allows him to understand citizens’ priorities and design policies that respond directly to their needs.
Nsereko will contest under the Ecological Party of Uganda (EPU), a newly established political formation that he believes represents a fresh approach to governance, accountability, and environmental responsibility.
The Kampala Central MP is among the few opposition figures who have consistently won parliamentary seats in central Uganda without running on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Over the years, he has built a reputation for publicly challenging both government officials and fellow opposition leaders whom he accuses of exploiting their positions for personal gain.
His decision to enter the presidential race is likely to draw attention to the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections, as new parties and independent voices position themselves as alternatives to the dominant political formations.
