Rukungiri, Uganda: Security Minister Jim Muhwezi has called on opposition leaders to collaborate with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in what he described as a shared mission to accelerate national development and strengthen unity across the country.
Speaking at a political rally in Rukungiri District, Mr Muhwezi, who is also the area MP for Rujumbura county, said inclusiveness is critical for Uganda’s progress and challenged political rivals to set aside partisan differences for the good of all citizens.
“Unity is a fundamental pillar for our national growth. In the spirit of togetherness, I invite everyone, including those in the opposition, to come on board,” Hon Muhwezi said. “Our nation can benefit greatly from collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing service delivery and ensuring that every Ugandan enjoys basic amenities.”
The Minister outlined a series of NRM government achievements over the years, citing investments in health, education, road infrastructure, and poverty alleviation programmes as evidence of the ruling party’s commitment to improving livelihoods.
According to Muhwezi, closer cooperation with the opposition could create even stronger momentum to tackle persistent challenges and close development gaps across regions.
Audience reactions were mixed, with NRM supporters applauding the message of inclusiveness, while some opposition figures expressed skepticism. Critics pointed out that past attempts at forging political unity have often struggled amid accusations of insincerity and concerns about transparency.
Chris Kagayano, the Bwambara Sub County chairperson, affirmed that due to Jim Muhwezi’s outstanding service delivery efforts in their area, his people from all parishes are determined to overwhelmingly support him to retain the seat.
Kamugisha Clement, an elder from Kikongi Parish, remarked that residents of other sub-counties in Rujumbura should ignore reports that Jim Muhwezi has no support in Bwambara, citing the overwhelming support he received as evidence.
Muhwezi’s call comes as Uganda’s political landscape continues to evolve, with parties and independents preparing strategies ahead of the next election cycle.
Political analysts believe the minister’s invitation could be a strategic effort to widen the NRM’s base by reaching out to undecided voters and moderate opposition supporters.
As debate over the prospects of cross-party collaboration gathers momentum, it remains unclear whether opposition leaders will embrace the appeal or maintain their distance in light of longstanding political rivalries.
