Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has allocated an additional Shs 2 billion to support the ongoing restoration of the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Uganda’s most significant cultural landmarks.
The funds were handed over on behalf of the President by his senior advisor, Lt. Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso, to key cultural representatives of the Buganda Kingdom in a ceremony attended by Prince David Kintu Wasajja, Princess Victoria Nkinzi, Princess Namikka, Minister Choltilda Nakate of Buganda’s Ministry of Culture, and Buganda Kingdom’s Protocol Chief, Owek. Kaddu Kiberu.
Gen. Nalweyiso praised the Buganda Kingdom’s dedication to the restoration project, emphasizing the site’s national importance.
“The President recognizes the importance of the Kasubi Tombs not only to Buganda but to Uganda as a whole. He is committed to supporting the full restoration and long-term preservation of all royal heritage sites in the region,” she said.
Minister Choltilda Nakate expressed gratitude for the government’s renewed financial support and pledged the kingdom’s commitment to preserving royal heritage sites across Buganda.
“This support is not only a boost to our restoration work but also a clear recognition of the role of culture in national development. The kingdom will ensure these sites are cared for with dignity and pride,” she said.
The handover ceremony included cultural blessings and a tour of the restoration works, where local artisans and heritage experts continue to rebuild the tombs in line with authentic traditional methods.
The Shs 2 billion injection comes amid broader national efforts to promote cultural tourism and heritage conservation, key pillars in Uganda’s strategy to revive its tourism sector.
The Kasubi Tombs, severely damaged by a fire in March 2010, hold the remains of four former Kabakas of Buganda. The restoration effort involves the Buganda Kingdom, the government of Uganda, UNESCO, and international partners, aiming to rebuild the tombs using traditional materials and craftsmanship.
