Bugweri, Uganda: The Woman Member of Parliament for Bugweri District, Hon. Rachel Magoola, popularly known as Obangaina, has urged residents to abandon politics of identity and division, instead embracing politics of shared interests that focus on service delivery, unity, and community transformation.
Speaking on Monday during the launch of her re-election campaign in Buwooya Parish, Buyanga Sub-county, Hon. Magoola emphasized that politics should serve the people’s needs, not divide them.
“I want to ask you to shun politics that brings no positive change to our communities. Let’s focus on politics where services to the people take priority. It’s unwise to remain in endless fights when our people are not benefiting,” Magoola said.
Campaigns Centred on Youth, Women Empowerment
Magoola, who is seeking a second term in Parliament, outlined her campaign priorities — including youth empowerment, women’s financial inclusion, and education support for disadvantaged children and teenage mothers.
“My second term will focus on helping our youth and women become economically independent through group support and skill-based projects,” she pledged.
She also condemned what she described as “blackmail politics” that dominated the NRM primaries, saying she was forced to run as an independent due to manipulation of results. “In Bubbala Village, I was given one vote — which was unbelievable. Some registrars turned into voters. But come January 15, 2026, it will be the people themselves who decide, not a few dishonest individuals,” she added.
For her first term, Magoola has been praised for spearheading education and social support initiatives, particularly for underprivileged children and teenage mothers, with over 80 learners under her direct sponsorship.
She has also supported community projects such as building houses for vulnerable residents, installing boreholes to improve access to clean water, and distributing wheelchairs to people with disabilities.
At the Tarehe Sita celebrations in Bugweri, Magoola used her musical performance slot to appeal to President Yoweri Museveni for support in completing the Bugweri District Administration Block, a request later backed by First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, leading to the UPDF Engineering Brigade taking over the project.
“President Museveni has been a good father to the nation. His leadership has brought peace, stability, and development through programmes like the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and others,” Magoola said as she rallied support for the NRM candidate in the 2026 elections.
What voters say
Residents at Magoola’s campaign rallies in Biyirima, Buwooya, Nasilaro, Bubbala, and Naluswa applauded her outreach and community engagement but also raised key local demands. Many called for electricity extension in Buwooya Parish and more boreholes in water-stressed areas, describing clean water access as “a pressing issue.”
“We’ve spent years without power. We hope Hon. Magoola will help lobby for electricity in our parish,” one local leader said during the rally.
Magoola’s campaign launch comes amid a charged political atmosphere in Bugweri, where several candidates have declared their bids ahead of the 2026 polls.
Among them is Ms Mercy Walukamba of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who launched her campaign in Igombe Sub-county, and Hajj Sadala Wandera, the NRM flagbearer for Bugweri County MP, who is expected to launch his campaign today at Busesa Saza Grounds.
Meanwhile, several aspirants across Busoga Sub-region have postponed their campaign launches to prepare for President Museveni’s campaign tour, which begins November 15 in Bugiri District and will conclude in Jinja City on November 21, 2025.
