Man, 20, dies after clash with police officers on New Year’s Eve

Police in Kamuli District are investigating a suspected murder after a 20-year-old man died from injuries sustained during a night incident involving officers on patrol in Namwendwa Town Council.

Kamuli, Uganda: Police in Kamuli District have launched investigations into a suspected murder case after a 20-year-old man died from injuries sustained during a night incident involving security officers on patrol in Namwendwa Town Council.

The deceased has been identified as Sibira Denis, a Musoga by tribe and resident of Bugobi Zone, Busimba Ward, Namwendwa Town Council.

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of December 31, 2025, as officers conducted routine foot patrols within the town council. Preliminary findings indicate that the officers were allegedly attacked by a group of individuals who pelted them with stones.

Police say that during efforts to manage and disperse the group, one individual sustained injuries. The injured person was later released into the care of a parent to seek medical attention.

“Unfortunately, the individual passed on while being taken for treatment,” police said in a statement.

Following the death, police opened a case of suspected murder, with one suspect currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations. The body of the deceased was conveyed to Kamuli General Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Confirming the development, Samson Lubega, the Busoga North Police spokesperson, said investigations had been instituted to establish the exact circumstances under which the young man sustained the fatal injuries and to determine accountability in line with the law.

“We have instituted comprehensive investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to determine accountability in accordance with the law,” SSP Lubega said.

Police appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as inquiries continue.

“We appeal to members of the community to remain calm, avoid speculation, and allow due process to take its course. Further updates will be communicated through official channels,” he added.

SSP Lubega reiterated the police’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.
