Police launch ‘mutataliza’ road safety campaign to curb rising fatal crashes in Luuka

Security in Luuka District has launched the ‘Mutataliza’ operation targeting boda boda riders and sugarcane truck drivers as road crashes and fatalities rise in Busoga sub-region.

Luuka, Uganda: Police in Luuka District have launched a tough road safety enforcement campaign dubbed “Mutataliza” as authorities move to curb a surge in fatal crashes involving boda bodas and sugarcane trucks.

The campaign was unveiled during a joint security meeting at Bulongo Sub County headquarters attended by boda boda riders, truck drivers and owners. The meeting was led by Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) Umar Ntogona, Busoga North Regional Traffic Officer SP Naigaga Sharifah and District Police Commander SP Namutunzi Diana.

SP Naigaga warned that enforcement of traffic laws will be intensified, particularly against drivers operating without valid licences, overloading and using mechanically unfit vehicles.

“We organised this meeting because accidents have been on the rise. We had to engage truck drivers, boda bodas, sugarcane cutters and loaders to find solutions before more lives are lost,” she said.

She added that although parts of the road have been renovated ahead of anticipated tarmacking works, crashes remain frequent, especially involving speeding trucks and motorcycles.

‘No One Will Be Spared’

ARDC Ntogona said government had previously adopted a sensitisation-first approach but warned that enforcement would now take centre stage.

“President Yoweri Museveni’s government always sensitises before arrests. We have come to remind you that you are going to be arrested. If you become careless with your life, it becomes easy to be careless with other people’s lives,” Ntogona said.

He cautioned that no driver or rider found violating traffic laws would be spared under the “Mutataliza” operation.

“All boda bodas, truck drivers and other road users known for breaking traffic rules shall be dealt with according to the traffic laws,” he emphasised.

Fatal Incidents Raise Alarm

The crackdown follows several deadly crashes in the district, including a recent incident in Kyanvuma Town Council where a school-going child was knocked dead by a speeding sugarcane truck in a case preliminarily linked to reckless driving.

Security officials say the campaign aims to reduce preventable deaths, enforce compliance with road safety regulations and instil discipline among commercial road users.

Drivers and riders have been urged to strictly observe traffic rules, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and prioritise the safety of passengers and pedestrians.
