Fresh Kamuli road crash kills three as death toll hits 12 in three days

Authorities say the pattern highlights growing concerns over road safety, particularly involving heavy commercial vehicles and reckless riding on narrow district roads.

Kamuli, Uganda: At least 12 people have been killed in a wave of road crashes in Kamuli and surrounding areas over the past three days, with the latest accident involving a taxi and two motorcycles claiming three more lives on Monday morning.

The latest crash occurred at around 8:40 am at Bufumba in Southern Division, Kamuli Municipality, along the busy Kamuli–Jinja Road.

According to Busoga North Police Spokesperson Samson Lubega, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace taxi (UAY 420W) and two motorcycles, registration numbers UFM 208W and UFB 491J.

Police identified the deceased as Isingoma Waiswa, 25, a boda boda rider from Kasambira Town Council; Muloobo Mutebi, 55, a passenger from Bukose; and Mpima Waiswa, 29, a resident of Bugoloire –Mbulamuti.

Two other victims sustained injuries, including taxi conductor Isabirye Geofrey, 27, and an unidentified motorcycle rider. Both were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Preliminary findings indicate that one motorcycle was attempting to branch off towards Mbulamuti Road when it was knocked by another that was following closely behind. The impact caused both riders and their passengers to fall onto the road, before the oncoming taxi rammed into them.

“The driver of the taxi is currently on the run and efforts are underway to have him identified and apprehended,” SSP Lubega said.

Police said officers responded swiftly to the scene and transported the injured to Kamuli General Hospital, where three victims were pronounced dead.

Series of Deadly Crashes

The incident adds to a string of recent fatal accidents in the region, including two involving sugarcane trucks, one on the Kamuli–Namasagali Road that left four people dead, and another in Buyende District that claimed five lives.

Authorities say the pattern highlights growing concerns over road safety, particularly involving heavy commercial vehicles and reckless riding on narrow district roads.

Police have urged motorists and riders to exercise caution, maintain safe distances, and observe traffic rules, especially at junctions and during overtaking.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, police registered a total of 322,441 road accident cases, down from 426,432 in 2024, representing a 24.4 percent decrease.

However, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety recorded 26,044 crashes, including 4,602 fatal, 13,563 serious, and 7,879 minor accidents.

Road crashes increased by 3.7 per cent in 2025 compared to 2024, with fatal crashes rising by 3.8 per cent, underscoring persistent risks on Uganda’s roads despite overall reductions in reported cases.
