Wakiso, Uganda: Police at Kajjansi Division are investigating a suspected case of child murder by poisoning after a one-year-old baby girl died under suspicious circumstances in Wakiso District.
The deceased has been identified as Balisala Promise, a one-year-old resident of Katwe Cell, Nakawuka Parish in Kajjansi Town Council.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident occurred on the night of April 10, 2026, when the child was reportedly left in the care of a relative.
“It’s alleged that for the last two days, the complainant had been leaving her child with the suspect, who is her nephew, while she went for night duty,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police say the suspect later confessed to administering an overdose of medicine to the child in an attempt to make her sleep after being disturbed at night.

“The suspect confessed that the kid always disturbs him at night, and the first time he administered an overdose of medicine for the baby to sleep, but they didn’t work, and instead the child ended up dying,” he added.
Authorities have since opened a case of murder by poisoning as investigations continue into the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The suspect remains in custody as detectives gather more evidence.
The tragic incident adds to growing concerns over child safety and domestic violence cases within communities, particularly where minors are left under the care of untrained or unwilling guardians.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, cases involving violence within domestic settings, including child neglect and abuse, remain a significant concern, with authorities repeatedly urging parents and guardians to exercise caution when entrusting children to caregivers.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected abuse or harmful practices that may endanger children.
