Guard stabbed in Iganga robbery dies as police recover stolen gun

A sniffer dog tracked the suspects’ trail up to a nearby railway station, while police recovered exhibits of forensic importance, including knives and hammers believed to have been used in the attack.

Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, confirmed the report on Friday morning

Iganga, Uganda: The security guard who was brutally stabbed during a robbery at an agent banking shop in Iganga has died, even as police successfully recovered the firearm stolen during the attack.

The victim, identified as Ochen Vincent, 28, had been on duty at Samisa Electronics and an agent banking outlet in Kasokoso Central I Village when he was attacked by unknown assailants.

Police say Ochen was attacked in the early hours of Thursday at around 4:00 am, where he was severely beaten and cut on the head before being robbed of a SAR rifle loaded with five rounds of live ammunition.

He was rushed to Iganga General Hospital and later referred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after admission.

According to Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, the stolen rifle was recovered following a tip-off from a vigilant landlord in Igamba Village, Iganga Northern Division.

“The stolen rifle was recovered with the vigilance of the landlord, who noticed suspicious tenants,” Kasadha said, adding that the suspects reportedly abandoned the weapon and fled when confronted.

A joint team led by the District Police Commander, detectives from Iganga CPS, and the Canine Unit responded to the scene.

A sniffer dog tracked the suspects’ trail up to a nearby railway station, while police recovered exhibits of forensic importance, including knives and hammers believed to have been used in the attack.

Investigations, police said, are ongoing, with a manhunt underway to apprehend the runaway suspects.

The incident highlights rising concerns over violent robberies targeting commercial premises and private security personnel.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, aggravated robberies and attacks on security guards remain a significant threat, often involving organised groups seeking firearms.

ASP Kasadha urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to aid crime prevention.
